Sseko's Pink Ribbon Project and My Grandmother's Legacy Through Her Battle with Breast Cancer

As this month is Breast Cancer Awareness month I entered a piece I wrote about my beautiful grandmother for Sseko's Pink Ribbon Project. This week I was honored to be chosen for their Friday feature. You can read it on their blog here or just scroll down to the bottom of this post.

Sseko is a company that is based in Uganda and creates beautiful handmade sandals that can be tied in hundreds of different ways. These sandals are hand made by a group of women in Uganda who make these sandals to earn money for their university education. On their website they state, "Sseko Designs is a not-just-for-profit enterprise that recognizes the power of business and responsible consumerism to support sustainable economic development, which in turn affects a country's educational, justice, and health care systems. The goal of Sseko Designs is two-fold: provide university tuition for these promising young women through a sustainable monthly income, while also contributing to the overall economic development of Uganda." How awesome is their goal?! Read the rest of their story here and shop their sandal designs here! Thank you Sseko for hosting the Pink Ribbon Project and for constantly seeking to empower and encourage women across the globe!

This is a picture of my radiant grandmother on her wedding day in 1955.

Before I was born there was a wonderful women named Helen Mar who loved me without even knowing my name. From the day I was born I was given a little piece of her, I was given her name to treasure as my very own middle name. Once I was old enough to understand I was told that my grandma Helen had passed away before I could ever meet her. She passed away just a few months before I was born. I heard many stories of what an amazing mother she was to my own dear mum and I thought of my grandmother often as a child. She may have died young but her influence in my life has always brought me courage and strength.

To this day people still come up to me occasionally and ask if I am Helen's granddaughter and then proceed to tell me stories of her kindness. We still use her amazing recipes in our home and my grandpa still loves to tell me the story of how he fell in love with her and swept her off her feet. She was fashionable and kind, loved teaching children and loved people. My mother often comments on how alike my grandma Helen and I are. She tells me how we both have the same gentle, intuitive spirit, creative talents, and flare for fashion. Every picture I've seen, everything I have been told about my grandmother I treasure away deep in my heart.

I never want to forget that I had a grandmother who nurtured her family well, was truly loved and respected by her husband and was cherished by those who knew her. My grandmother fought breast cancer for a year and a half and died at the age of 57. Even though she died so many years ago she left behind a legacy far greater then she could have anticipated. She inspired and centered me all my growing up with the knowledge that my grandmother had lived such a full and beautiful life in such a short time. To me she is the most beautiful woman I could ever look up to or hope to be like. She was brave, she was beautiful and she is my grandmother.

The age of invincibility

Last week I turned 20. This is a little note I wrote to myself, a reminder of what the truth is and what growing up means. I can hardly believe I have been on the earth 20 years. I don’t know where I thought I would be at 20 but I don’t think I expected to be where I am today. Good thing God's the one in control of this messy thing I call my life.

The age of invincibility
The age of invincibility is that stage between losing all your childish wonder and gaining all of your world-weariness. You are young, You don’t have to worry about your body decaying quite yet. Whatever you set your mind to do you can do it. This stage in your life is passing by quickly, so very quickly. You’ll never be this young, this sharp, this strong, this able again. Of course with age you will gain many new companions such as patience, and experience but you need to remember you are in your prime RIGHT NOW. You are living the time of your life that you always dreamed of. I know you thought 20 would be so much older, so much smarter, so much more adult and put together but the truth is it’s not. Life is gradual so embrace the days you’ve been given and prepare yourself for the tomorrows that will come. Don’t let your youth slip away wrapped up in your bed or enamored with your computer. Go out and LIVE your life. Embrace all of the opportunities that come your way. Don’t be afraid. You are strong. You are smart. You are beautiful. Don’t let anything or anyone hold you back especially not your failures. Failures make people stronger when they choose to get back up and press on. So get stronger and don’t hold back. Never be afraid to ask questions even if they seem silly you’ll only become smarter because of it.

Dining in Santa Barbara

While I was in Santa Barbara a couple weekends ago we visited quite a few fun places to eat. On our first night in Santa Barbara we went to Rudy's Mexican Restaurant. We all ordered the Pastor Burrito and headed to the beach for a little sunset picnic. It was the perfect way to end a long day of driving. Friends, the ocean, and delicious food!

The next day after surprising David we went to an ocean cliff and ate tomato soup which we picked up at Safeway and was excellent.
That night David took me to State Street and we wandered in and out of shops and decided to stop for dinner at Sakura Express. I don't remembered what meal we ordered but it was quite yummy!

The next day we went to Backyard Bowls which is basically a restaurant where you order a smoothie in a bowl with granola, honey and a bunch of fresh fruit piled on top! So yummy! I could probably eat there everyday if I lived nearby one! We ordered the Island Bowl (I highly recommend!) and the Backyard Bowl (This one has a complex flavor and is definitely more for the adventurous eater.)
The Island Bowl (above) and the Backyard Bowl (below).

That afternoon we went to this great little coffee shop called Zizzo's Coffee. I ordered their Sicilion Latte (hazelnut and caramel) which was amazing!!!! This coffee shop was airy and comfy and had fresh flowers in little vases scattered all around!

My last night in Santa Barbara David took me out to this wonderfully Indian restaurant called Spice Avenue. I highly recommend this restaurant. The atmosphere was dark, quiet and relaxing. The service was great and the food was superb. We ordered a lamb dish, a side of rice and a side of wholewheat, unleavened bread.
