The Turquoise Streak

Here is my lovely turquoise streak. I have been dreaming up this turquoise streak for a very long time. As it turns out I was looking through my old sketch book with David and we stumbled upon this illustration I had done back in 2009.

I guess some dreams never die.
This little dream was also on my 19 before 20 list of goals.
(more on that to come)

Soon after dying my hair I knew I needed to create a challenge for myself. This challenge needed to empower me to embrace the full experience of having such a colorful addition to my hair. I decided to document it by photographing it daily and posting about it on a separate little blog titled "The Turquoise Streak Project."

The Turquoise Streak Project

On the evening of April 11, 2011 I bleached my hair using the Beyond the Zone Radical Bleach Kit from Sally Beauty. It worked really well though I would suggest leaving the bleach in your hair for at least 2 hours if you have dark hair like mine. I learned this the hard way. I left the bleach in for the suggested 60 minutes rinsed it out and proceeded to apply the turquoise dye. Sadly my streak turned green, so I re-bleached the streak for another hour rinsed it out and went to bed exhausted.

The next morning, April 12, 2011, and dyed my bleached out streak turquoise. This time I had success! I used Beyond the Zone Color Jam Tripped up Turquoise (also from Sally Beauty.) It worked like a charm.

On April 13, 2011 I realized my streak wasn’t as vibrant as I wanted it to be so I re-dyed it. Normally if you want your color to stay better you apply heat to the hair you have applied dye to. I discovered with this turquoise color you get better results just leaving the dye in for a good hour or so and letting the dye dry onto your hair naturally, after that just give it a thorough rinse and voila, beautiful blue hair. Surprising I know.

And there you have it. My turquoise streak dying adventures!

  3. I love this! Found your blog via faithblogs, and it's so nice to meet other Christian bloggers. I just read The Girl Who Chased the Moon, and she has a pink streak in her hair throughout the whole book, so you totally remind me of that character. I highly recommend the book, btw. : )

  4. I found you via google, searching turquoise streak. This is really helpful - I have fading dark blue hair (sfx blue velvet) and am thinking of doing a turquoise streak next time i dye (only mine will be in the front).

  6. Hi! I would like to open beauty salon. Does anybody have an experience in this business? There are too many options in different salon equipment. Could anybody give me an advise? What store is more reliable to buy Curling iron for thick hair and Curling iron with clamp. I'm choosing between Advance-Esthetic.Com and Spa&Equipment websites.
